Challenging the limits: Spain and the untapped potential in Deep Tech

[OPINIÓN] – By Silvia Paredes, naifman’s International Business Development Manager

As Head of International Business Development at naifman, I had the privilege of attending the Hello Tomorrow Global Summit in Paris, an event that not only dazzled with the latest innovations in Deep Tech, but also made clear the immense potential that Spain has before it and that, in my opinion, we are doing little to exploit.

The Global Summit brings together the brightest in the world of technology, from creative minds to visionary investors. In this edition of the event, more than 80 startups presented innovative solutions ranging from IT to digital health and environment. This event is not only a showcase for human ingenuity, but also a reminder that the future belongs to those who dare to challenge limits.

Spain, with its vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem, cannot afford to be left behind in the Deep Tech race, which not only represents an opportunity to solve complex problems, but can also be an engine for economic growth and sustainable development. Some investors in our country know a lot about this, such as Tom Horsey himself (whom we had the opportunity of interviewing here). However, it is time that investors and capital funds, as a whole, begin to recognize the strategic value of betting on Deep Tech in Spain with the same emphasis that is done in our neighboring country, France, or a little further north, in the United Kingdom.

Events like Hello Tomorrow Global Summit lead us to urge the players in the Spanish entrepreneurial ecosystem, especially investors, to look beyond the conventional and invest in the disruptive ideas that are emerging in the Deep Tech field. In doing so, they will not only be supporting local entrepreneurship, but will also be laying the foundations for the strengthening of an entrepreneurial ecosystem such as the Spanish one, which requires a constant boost to continue growing and competing on the international stage.

I would not say the above if I did not believe there was real potential. Although undoubtedly one of the crucial challenges for Spanish entrepreneurs in the Deep Tech field is learn how to clearly and convincingly communicate your value proposition and business idea. In other words: knowing how to sell. The highly technical and complex nature of Deep Tech presents an additional hurdle in effectively conveying these concepts even to specialized audiences such as investment funds or business angels. Therefore, it is essential that entrepreneurs master the art of highlighting the tangible impact of their innovations. Undoubtedly an important task ahead.

Finally, it is essential that public institutions also join in this vision, creating an enabling environment for the development and adoption of cutting-edge technologies. For some time now, it has been demonstrated that collaboration between the public and private sector is essential to drive innovation and ensure that Spain lives up to its potential on the global Deep Tech stage. With a coherent strategy and a shared commitment, it is possible to turn future challenges into opportunities.
